Just like that, my usual short commute to one of my offices was made twice as long.
I am not necessarily complaining, I can understand the need to for sturdy, new, giant culverts for me to drive over for years to come, but what I marvel over is how this single activity now make my drive to work far more complicated with curves and turns and intersections with brand new lights.

COMMUNITY HEALTH & CARE MONTH
Each October, we observe Community Health & Care Month by highlighting a few of the many important programs and services provided to local residents. Throughout the month:

STAYCATION RAFFLE TICKETS ON SALE
Community Care is once again giving local residents an opportunity to “get away from it all” by staying close to home and supporting a fundraising raffle this fall. The second annual “Staycation” Raffle offers five great prizes for packages at local businesses.
First prize is a Luxury Spa Package at Eganridge Inn & Spa, valued at $255. Second prize is a Pie for a Month for one year, courtesy of The Little Pie Shack in Fenelon Falls ($200 value). Third prize: Overnight Stay for 2 at Eganridge ($175 value). Fourth prize: Catered Dinner for 4 at Home, or Dine-In at Nolan’s Restaurant ($75). Fifth prize: Two 9-hole Rounds of Golf with Cart at Byrnell Golf Club ($70).
Last year’s Staycation raised close to $2,000 in support of Community Care programs, and organizers with the Fenelon Falls Local Volunteer Committee are hoping for a sell-out (2,000 tickets) this time! Tickets are just $2 each and will soon be on sale at Community Care offices. Draws take place Jan. 8, 2018.
SENIORS COMMUNITY KITCHEN – LET’S GET COOKING!
This fall, Community Care and the HKPR District Health Unit present opportunities for local residents to sharpen their cooking skills and enjoy culinary creativity with others. Seniors Community Kitchen sessions are being held in Bethany and Bolsover. Participants will sample new recipes and will be supervised by Community Care’s Registered Dieitian and the Health Unit’s Food Worker.
Upcoming sessions:
Bethany – Oct. 11, Nov. 8 and Dec. 13 (Wednesdays), 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Bethany United Church. Cost is $5/class.
Bolsover – Oct. 31 and Nov. 28 (Tuesdays), 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. No charge, as the program is supported by the Woodville-Eldon Food Bank and St. Andrew’s.

COMMUNITY CARE MEALS ON WHEELS PROGRAM COMES TO BOBCAYGEON
New healthy eating options have come to residents of Bobcaygeon, in the form of Community Care’s Meals on Wheels program.
The organization has provided Meals on Wheels service for more than 30 years in many local communities. A twice-weekly (Monday and Wednesday) pilot program was launched last month in Bobcaygeon, in response to growing need. Residents who register for the service can purchase nutritious hot meals that are delivered to their home at lunchtime.
The program is designed for seniors and adults with special needs who are experiencing difficulty with cooking or healthy eating. Meals are prepared in Community Care facilities according to the Canada Food Guide. Special dietary options are available. The program ensures that clients’ nutritional needs are met while also providing social interaction and a security check from volunteers making the deliveries.

FENELON FALLS NOW OFFERING MONTHLY THURSDAY DINERS CLUB
As a result of changes in diners’ preferences and staff resources, the Congregate Dining supper traditionally held for many years on the third Thursday of each month in Fenelon Falls has been changed to a noontime Diners Club luncheon. Community Care also presents Diners Club luncheons every Tuesday at noon in Fenelon Falls.
Diners Club luncheons feature a delicious meal prepared by our excellent staff and volunteers in the Fenelon Falls kitchen, as well as entertainment or guest speakers. Attendees are asked to contact our Fenelon Falls office in advance to reserve spots.
Community Care Diners Clubs are also held weekly (Wednesdays) in Lindsay, and monthly in Bobcaygeon, Burnt River, Cambray, Kirkfield, Oakwood, Omemee and Woodville. The full schedule is on our website Here.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Community Care is always recruiting people to volunteer with the food service programs in Fenelon Falls. Volunteers interested in helping with food preparation in the kitchen, or in serving at our weekly Diners Club luncheons, are asked to contact Home Support Services Program Manager Kerri Daley at ext 231 ().
BROKERED HELPERS NEEDED
Help with heavier work around the home can be important to maintaining independence. Community Care maintains a list of brokered helpers – individuals and companies who can help with lawn and garden work, snow shovelling and other household maintenance. We recruit, screen and register these “brokered helpers” and match them to clients, depending upon needs. Service arrangements are made between the client and the brokered helpers, who are paid directly by the client for the service.
Additional brokered helpers are currently needed in the Omemee, Pontypool, Janetville and Bethany areas. If you are interested in becoming a brokered helper, contact Volunteer Services Co-ordinator Wendy Bruckert at ext 160 (e-mail: ).

GET THE MOST FROM YOUR HEALTHCARE APPOINTMENT
Community Care and the Central East LHIN Self-Management Program are collaborating to present an opportunity for local residents to maximize their healthcare appointments. “Getting the Most From Your Healthcare Appointment” is a free workshop on Monday, Oct. 16 at Kawartha Lakes Retirement Residence, Bobcaygeon (2 to 3:30 p.m.).
The workshop will focus on what to do before, during and after an appointment with a health professional. The interactive workshop will use a variety of learning resources including information sharing, videos, tools and a resource manual supporting the individual with integrating the skills into their next appointment.

HOSPICE WEBINAR INFORMATION SERIES
The free webinar information series presented by Community Care Hospice Services continues this month. Twice each month, we present a 90-minute webinar offered by the Hospice Foundation of America. This month’s topic is “When Death and Loss are Part of the Job”. Enrollment in Ontario’s basic income pilot gets underway in Lindsay next week.
In-person enrollment sessions will begin Oct. 12-13 where people can complete applications to be part of the pilot.
Minister of Community and Social Services, Dr. Helena Jaczek, was in Lindsay this week touring and visited A Place Called Home, a 19-bed hostel for homeless single adults, couples and families with children. Jaczek spoke with staff and individuals there, about how they could benefit from the pilot. A Place Called Home is one of the community organizations that is supporting the Ontario Basic Income Pilot.
About two thirds of basic income sign-ups so far have come from the so-called ‘working poor,’ a fact Lindsay residents who are struggling should take note of as it begins to unfold here.
Ontario’s Minister of Community and Social Services, Helena Jaczek, and her counterpart, Peter Milczyn, the minister responsible for the poverty reduction strategy and minister of housing, held a press conference in Hamilton earlier this morning to update the public on the basic income pilot.
The basic income pilot is being held in Hamilton/Brant County and Thunder Bay, which began during the summer, and in Lindsay, which will begin this fall.
It’s the last year for John Hagarty as Lindsay’s chief of police, given his imminent retirement next fall, and it’s not shaping up to be an easy one.
The wave of fentanyl and other opioid-related deaths that has been surging across Canada has finally hit small-town Ontario – including Lindsay, Kawartha Lakes, and nearby Peterborough.
Hagarty knew it was coming to Kawartha Lakes. It was only a matter of time. Not only is there fentanyl to worry about, there is a far deadlier version known as carfentanil – a synthetic heroin laced with elephant tranquilizers, and 100 times more potent than regular fentanyl. Just a few granules are enough to be lethal, and they can easily be hidden within other drugs.

The above was actual employer feedback from a large area employer about the young people sent to Victoria County Career Services (VCCS). It wasn’t the only business feedback.

TVO’s flagship show, The Agenda, with host Steve Paikin, will roll into Lindsay on Tuesday to film a special episode built around the town’s basic income pilot.
The production crew was in town last week, filming snippets with people in various locations around town.
Mike Perry was chair last year of the Kawartha Lakes Food Coalition. He and his team are largely credited with convincing the Province to bring one of three basic income pilots to Lindsay.
Autumn is perhaps my favourite season. The palette of hues which grace the Kawartha Lakes between September and mid-November have inspired both outdoor enthusiasts and artists for generations. One such artist was W.A. Goodwin, who, though a Lindsay resident for three quarters of a century, has largely faded into the mists of history.
Well, not entirely.
Motorists crossing at the intersection of Cambridge and Peel Streets are no doubt familiar with the badly-neglected frame building on the northwest corner. For years, this once-picturesque structure was home to “Wm. A. Goodwin Room Papers & Picture Frames” ‒ essentially, the ‘Scott’s Decorating Centre’ of its day.
City of Kawartha Lakes’ Chief Administrative Officer Ron Taylor has proposed another $7 million investment in capital works projects for the City for 2018, such as for roads and arenas.
In outlining the general direction for the 2018 budget, Taylor and his staff described the 2018 budget as the first step in the roll-out of the 10 year financial plan that was adopted by Council this year.
When the Lindsay Central Exhibition began, the idea of Canada was still 13 years away. What started out as a modest event of the Lindsay Agricultural Society has turned into the fourth largest agricultural fair in the province and one of Ontario’s top 10 fairs overall.
In fact, General Manager Harry Stoddart says the five day event which starts Sept. 20 this week, had gotten so large and sprawling that organizers took steps to make it feel more intimate this year.
