Trent-Severn Waterway Opens for 2018 Season

By Lindsay Advocate

Parks Canada announces that the Trent-Severn Waterway’s 44 lock stations located between Trenton and Port Severn are now open for the 2018 navigation season. Last year, the Trent-Severn Waterway saw an increase in boat traffic of 30 per cent over 2016 and we look forward to continue to welcome visitors this season.

2018 is the perfect time to experience the rich heritage and natural beauty of this Canadian National Historic Site and Parks Canada will continue to improve visitor offerings by developing new and innovative programs, improved facilities, and expanded services.

New this year: Paddlers get a 50 per cent discount on seasonal lockage permits for canoes and kayaks. All paddlers can launch their own adventure along Canada’s original highways. The lockage permit is valid for the entire navigation season and provides passage through all of Parks Canada’s historic canals.

This season, visitors to the waterway can also take advantage of two free lockage days. On June 24 free lockage will be provided as a thank you for a great 2017 season and on July 1 free lockage will be provided in celebration of Canada Day.

Also new for the 2018 navigation season is the recently launched Ontario Waterways Water Management InfoNet, accessible on the Trent-Severn Waterway website home page. The portal contains background information on water management practices, water management updates, frequently asked questions about water management, various reports on water management, and the most recent water levels of lakes along the waterway.

The “Twitter Boater Information Service” that was launched last year will be continue to provide real-time information via Twitter to the boater community. @TSWBoaterInfo will be operated by a team that will monitor conditions along the waterway, tweeting updates along with useful visitor information to make the waterway experience an enjoyable one.
