Student arrested for uttering threats in LCVI incident
Just before lunch yesterday, police were called to LCVI in Lindsay due to a threat a student received through social media.
Administrative Sergeant Ryan Boutin, of Kawartha Lakes Police Service, says “the threat referenced a weapon being used, specifically a knife.”
“Given the nature of the threat the school elected to enter into a lock and secure position as a safety precaution while the police investigation was completed.”
Shortly thereafter a youth was arrested at a residence in Lindsay and a charge of uttering threats was laid. The school resumed normal operation.
“There was no weapon displayed or used during the incident,” Boutin said.
A Grade 11 student, who is not being identified, said at first he was in a bathroom when an announcement was made. However, he says the PA system at LCVI was not clear enough to let him know what was going on at first.
He eventually got to the classroom and said he “saw a police officer on my way back to class.”
The parent of the same child at LCVI also spoke to Kawartha Lakes Weekly, saying she is especially worried after the school’s principal, Ray Este, downplayed the incident and any issues with the PA system.
“It felt like he really doesn’t see the severity of the situation,” she said, referencing the school principal.
However, Carolynne Bull, manager of communications services for Trillium Lakelands District School Board, said the administrator of LCVI “is aware of the concern” and “will be investigating the PA system.”
