Mattress recycling program temporarily on hiatus until further notice

By Lindsay Advocate

The municipality's mattress recycling program has been temporarily halted until further notice.

Due to an unexpected shut down at the plant where the municipality contracts out mattress recycling, the mattress recycling program has been temporarily suspended until further notice.

The contractor has informed the municipality that they will not be able to accept mattresses collected at the Lindsay Ops landfill until at least late September, possibly later.

Since recycled mattress space at the Lindsay Ops landfill is limited, municipal authorities are asking the community to refrain from bringing mattresses or box springs to the landfill until further notice. The City of Kawartha Lakes will be suspending the sale of curbside mattress tags online and at municipal service centres until the contractor is able to collect recycled mattresses again.

The municipality assures residents who have already purchased a mattress tag and scheduled a pick-up with Miller Waste that it will be honoured. Those who have purchased a mattress tag and haven’t scheduled their pick-up yet are asked to please refrain from doing so until the program returns.

When the mattress recycling program is back in business, the municipality will be sure to let the community know through a news release and social media posts.

About recycling mattresses in Kawartha Lakes

The City of Kawartha Lakes started recycling mattresses at the Lindsay Ops landfill in September 2018.

In 2021, it banned mattresses from being disposed of anywhere but the Lindsay Ops landfill, and in 2022 it added a second trailer in Lindsay to keep up with the demand. With the help of residents, the municipality has diverted over 31,167 mattresses from going into our landfills as of April 2024.

Reminder: while the program is running, mattresses are only accepted at the Lindsay Ops landfill, they will not be accepted at the Eldon, Fenelon, Laxton or Somerville landfills.
