Machik hosts screening of ‘Sacred Arrow’

By Lindsay Advocate

'Sacred Arrow,' a Tibetan love story about archery, expectations and the meaning of winning in a time of change, is being screened tomorrow evening (July 31) at Century 3 Theatre.

Machik, which this past spring hosted its first Lindsay fundraising dinner since 2019, is inviting the entire community to a free screening of a multi-award-winning Tibetan film Sacred Arrow, tomorrow evening – July 31 – at the Century 3 Theatre in Lindsay (141 Kent Street West).

A Tibetan love story about archery, expectations, and the meaning of winning in a time of change, Sacred Arrow represents the work of the late Pema Tseden, Tibet’s leading filmmaker and long-time Machik supporter. Pema Tseden served on Machik’s Advisory Board for many years. He passed away on 8 May 2023, leaving behind one of the greatest storytelling legacies in Tibetan history.

Pema Tseden was born in the Amdo region of Tibet. He was a son of pastoralists and studied at the Northwest Nationalities University in Lanzhou. He worked as a teacher and civil servant while writing and publishing to critical acclaim in Tibetan and Chinese. In 2002, he was the first Tibetan to attend the Beijing Film Academy and in 2005 his film, Silent Holy Stones (2005), won the Golden Rooster Award, the PRC’s top film award, for Best Directorial Debut. The Search (2009) won the Special Jury Award at the 12th Shanghai International Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize at the Bangkok International Film Festival. Old Dog (2011) won Best Picture in the Tokyo International Film Festival and won Best Native Feature at the Brooklyn Film Festival. Tharlo (2015) won the Golden Horse Award in Taiwan for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Best Film award at the Tokyo Filmex, among other awards. Jinpa (2018) won Best Screenplay at the Venice International Film Festival and won Best Director at the Golden Horse Awards. Balloon (2019) premiered in North America at the Toronto International Film Festival and won Best Screenplay at the Chicago International Film Festival, among others.

The screening of Sacred Arrow (in Tibetan with English subtitles) is sponsored by the Kawartha Art Gallery, the Lindsay & District Chamber of Commerce, and Century 3 Theatre. Doors open at 5:45 p.m., the film starts at 6:00 p.m., and will be followed at 7:30 p.m. by a Q&A session. Admission is free, though donations are welcome.
