Kawartha Lakes Food Source’s ‘Reverse Advent Calendar’ returns this November

KLFS is anticipating another increase in food bank use throughout the winter months due to a loss in income for seasonal workers.

As the holiday season approaches, Kawartha Lakes Food Source (KLFS) is gearing up to launch its annual Reverse Advent Calendar food drive. This year’s event will run from Nov. 1 through 30, 2024.

The idea behind the Reverse Advent Calendar is simple: rather than getting something each day, the KLFS is calling on the community to give something by providing a food or household item to donate daily.

Last year, the Reverse Advent Calendar collected a total of 2,440 pounds of donations, and the KLFS is hoping to beat that number this year.

How to Participate

Residents are asked to complete the Reverse Advent Calendar by collecting as many items as they can from a list provided by the KLFS. Before or after the weekend of Nov. 30, they can drop off their finished Reverse Advent Calendars to the KLFS distribution centre, located at 164 Needham Street in Lindsay.

The full list of items assigned to each day between November 1 and 30 can be found at kawarthlakesfoodsource.com. Residents can also stay tuned to KLFS’s social media channels for weekly posts and updates to join in on the fun.

This event is particularly exciting when participants team up with a group to help collect each item. The Reverse Advent Calendar is a great way for school classrooms, sports teams, or offices to work together in their cohorts to give back to the community and make a difference this winter.

Now that summer employment opportunities are finished for the year, the KLFS is anticipating another increase in food bank use throughout the winter months due to a loss in income for seasonal workers. The Reverse Advent Calendar is one of the opportunities KLFS has created to help the community engage in our fight against hunger. Many of the donations collected through this initiative can be distributed in time for Christmas, providing food and hope to our friends and neighbours who are struggling.

If Canada had “leadership”, and leadership that “cared” the government of the day would invoke laws to promote competition .. bringing in foreign grocery distributors from the United States looking to expand their markets creating competition driving prices down….isnt that truly a “free market”?
If I were a conspiracy theorist I swear the political establishment IS SUBSERVIENT to corporate interest rather than Canadians but that too is window dressing making many canadians swallow their pride and frequent food banks…Oh Canada proud and free? I think not….it wasnt that long ago in the House of Commons both liberal and conservative accused each other of having MPs in the pockets of grocers…enough said
