Some 300,000 unhoused pets enter shelters each year in Canada, and today shelters across the nation are overflowing. The Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes is proud to partner and bring adoptable pets to the Peterborough PetSmart in support of PetSmart Charities of Canada’s National Adoption Week, taking place November 6-12.

Approximately 700,000 adoptable pets are waiting in shelters right now, and senior pets often stay longest. PetSmart Charities of Canada’s National Adoption Week in November coincides with National Adopt a Senior Pet Month. Older pets are often overlooked because of potential future health risks and concerns about ingrained behaviours. But they can make ideal companions for those looking for certain attributes. PetSmart Charities of Canada encourages potential pet parents to consider the benefits of inviting an adult pet to join your pack:

– Bonding with senior pets can be a bit easier as they’re more likely to be calmer, more experienced and house-trained.

– For those in search of a fellow “couch potato” to watch movies with or even to lay low while working, senior pets can be the perfect match.

– Whether it’s their preferences or their personalities, pets in the golden years may be more transparent.

– Living with senior pets can inspire their people to slow down and take time to stop and smell the roses.

– Adopting senior pets ensures peace and better health in their final years and helps shelters to ease overcrowding.

“Partnering with PetSmart Charities of Canada has been critical for the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes to save more lives and help get pets into a new home faster than we could without their help,” says Judi Cannon, Executive Director of the Humane Society of Kawartha Lakes.

During the in-store event, HSKL invites potential pet parents to meet adoptable pets in their area. Opportunities will be given to spend time with pets in need in spacious meet and greet areas. Staff and volunteers will help potential adopters learn about caring for pets and point to welcome resources.

To view all available pets for adoption, please visit HSKL’s website to find out who is looking for their new family. All pets are spayed or neutered, microchipped, age appropriate vaccines, and flea/tick/internal parasite control.

“This special week is a call to action, and an opportunity to bring new love into your home,” said Heidi Marston, director of pet placement at PetSmart Charities of Canada. “Shelters across the nation are overflowing, and we’re encouraging folks to consider the unique joys of older pets, who bring a special kind of low-key, loyal comfort to their people. Some of my deepest bonds have been with pets who came into my life when they were in their golden years – it really is a gift. We’re thankful for HSKL’s partnership in helping make perfect matches!”

Adoptable pets will be available at the following times and PetSmart location: November 6-12, 9:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m., 898 Monaghan Rd. No. 2, Peterborough, ON K9J 1Y9.
