Holiday weekend traffic stops lead to charges for two drivers
The Kawartha Lakes Police Service has charged two individuals following driving-related incidents over the holiday weekend.
The first incident occurred on May 16, just after midnight, when an officer observed a silver hatchback in the area of Adelaide Street and Kent Street West intentionally squealing its tires and driving erratically through multiple intersections.
The vehicle was stopped, and the investigation revealed that the licence plate attached to the vehicle was not authorized for it. In addition, the driver failed to surrender his driver’s licence upon demand.
An 18-year-old male from Lindsay has been charged with:
- Driving motor vehicle to perform a stunt
- Failure to surrender the driver’s licence
- Using plates not authorized for the vehicle
The accused’s driver’s licence was suspended for 30 days, and the vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
The second incident occurred on May 17, at approximately 10:00 p.m. An officer on routine patrol observed a minivan travelling without headlights. The officer began following the vehicle, which then struck a curb while attempting a turn onto Bond Street West and briefly drove onto the sidewalk.
A traffic stop was conducted, and the male driver displayed signs of alcohol consumption. He was placed under arrest for impaired operation and transported to the Kawartha Lakes Police Service, where he provided breath samples that registered over twice the legal limit.
A 42-year-old male has been charged with:
- Operation While Impaired – alcohol and drugs
- Operation While Impaired – blood alcohol concentration (80 plus)
He was released with a future court date. The accused’s driver’s licence was suspended for 90 days, and the vehicle was impounded for seven days.
