The City of Kawartha Lakes is pleased to announce the acclamation of Ward 7 Councillor Charlie McDonald for deputy mayor in 2025.

Deputy Mayor McDonald reflected on the accomplishments of 2024 in his address to Council, staff and the public at the December 10, 2025 Council meeting. “As my term as deputy mayor comes to an end, I’m grateful and proud of what we’ve achieved together. It’s been an honor to serve, and I appreciate the efforts of our teamwork over the past year.”

During his 2024 term, the deputy mayor highlighted key achievements, including:

Short-Term Rentals: Chairing a task force with Councillors Richardson, Joyce, and Perry to create a robust licensing and enforcement system. This initiative has become a model for municipalities across the province, improving safety and compliance for both residents and visitors.

Customer Service Enhancements: Facilitating collaboration across departments to measure performance and address challenges, laying a strong foundation for continued improvements that benefit residents in the most-requested service areas.

International Plowing Match (IPM): Supporting the successful execution of this event, which welcomed 50,000 visitors to Kawartha Lakes and showcased the community’s vibrant spirit and teamwork.

2025 Budget: Leading the Budget Committee in developing a comprehensive financial plan that balances the needs of the municipality while ensuring sustainability.

Deputy Mayor McDonald expressed gratitude for the support of Mayor Doug Elmslie, CAO Ron Taylor, Council colleagues, and staff. “The deputy mayor may chair the task force meetings and be the front-runner, but it’s the team that makes things work,” he said. “Kawartha Lakes is fortunate to have a group of people who care so deeply about our community and its residents.”

Deputy Mayor McDonald brings a wealth of experience and a commitment to building on the progress achieved in 2024. “I am honored to serve as deputy mayor and look forward to working with Council, staff and community members to continue advancing our shared goals,” said McDonald. “Together, we can make 2025 a year of continued success and growth for Kawartha Lakes.”
