Creating new digital spaces with fall after-school coding camps

Pinnguaq’s Kawartha Lakes Makerspace will be filled with aspiring in-person and online coders and game designers this fall as they launch four after-school workshops, starting in October. These no-cost courses introduce key concepts in programming, hardware, and software, and inspire youth participants to look at careers and educational possibilities in key STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) fields as they develop new skills they can start using immediately.
The four courses, offered in-person (five spaces at the Kawartha Lakes Makerspace in Lindsay) and online (15 spaces available to youth in Canada):
Exploring the World through Minecraft – Wednesdays, 4:00 – 5:30 pm, October 13 – December 8
Participants aged 9-12 can join in the Minecraft Education Edition to learn more about the world around us. Students will explore all sorts of things from rollercoasters to the human circulatory system and even discover how empathy and cooperation can be used to solve real-world problems.
Introduction to Java – Wednesdays, 6:00- 7:00 pm, October 13 – December 8
This course is designed to give youth programmers, aged 13-17, an introduction both to the Java programming language as well as object-oriented programming (OOP). Java is a very well known and widely used language applying to almost any field. The course will review some basic coding concepts but introduce many that are specific to object-oriented programming such as inheritance, polymorphism and encapsulation. The course will end with an introduction to designing graphical user interfaces (GUI).
Creative Coding Intermediate – Fridays, 4:00 – 5:30 pm, October 15 – December 10
This course, for participants aged 9-12, is designed for learners who have previously taken our Creative Coding Beginner course. Learners will have the opportunity to create their own coding projects as well as to explore other coding platforms, games, and activities that help to solidify basic coding concepts.
Code Your Own Website – Intro to HTML, CSS & Javascript – Mondays, 4:00 – 5:30 pm, October 18 – December 6
Participants aged 9-12 will learn how to code their very own websites using the coding languages HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Whether it’s somewhere to share about your hobbies or a place to post photos of your cat, having your own website is a ton of fun. You’ll learn how to add things to websites, design them to look amazing, and even add some fun interactive features as you explore with code.
