BGC Kawarthas opens splashpad for public access on weekends

By Roderick Benns

The Splash Pad at BGC Kawarthas will be open to the public on weekends beginning Saturday, June 26. Weekdays, the Splash Pad will be reserved for BGC camp and childcare participants.

The new public hours will be Saturdays, Sundays and Statutory Holidays beginning Saturday, June 26 from 10 am – 5 pm.The public will not be able to use the Splash Pad on weekdays when BGC programs are operating.

“We are so happy to offer public access to our Splashpad this summer on the weekends as we have seen how much joy it brings to families,” says Amy Terrill, Executive Director.  “Given the public health protocols we must preserve weekday use for our program participants so that we can ensure their safety.”

Turning the taps on comes at a cost to the Club. Each hour costs about $60 in water and sewer charges and additional costs. The splashpad uses over 2,358,000 gallons of water during the summer. That is equivalent to 56,142 bath tubs and about 218 12×24 pools.  BGC Kawarthas Foundation is currently raising money for the water costs in their Turn on the Taps Campaign.

In inviting the public to use the Splash Pad, BGC Kawarthas also reminds people that,

  • It is the responsibility of all users to adhere to public health guidelines;
  • No dogs are allowed on the property;
  • The Club is a non-smoking site;
  • Shade umbrellas are recommended as shade is limited on the property

BGC Kawarthas will adhere to the health guidelines that have been set by Public Health and the Province of Ontario. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to evolve, further changes may be necessary. For more information you can call the Club at 705-324-4493 or visit the website www.bgckawarthas.com.
