Accessibility forum at Fleming in October
An upcoming event in Lindsay will shine a spotlight on accessibility, education and employment for persons with disabilities.
The municipality of Kawartha Lakes and Fleming College have teamed up to host an accessibility forum on Oct. 23 with a theme of ‘Accessible Education Towards Accessible Employment.’
The event will be held at Fleming College’s Frost Campus – located at 200 Albert Street South – and will be a full day celebrating diversity and inclusivity featuring keynote speaker David C. Onley and other special guests.
“We are pleased to welcome a distinguished guest, the Honourable David C. Onley, to Kawartha Lakes to join in our discussions on ‘Accessible Education towards Accessible Employment’. This day is about erasing social stigma, exploring human potential and drawing from the talent of individuals,” said Barb Condie, the accessibility officer of Kawartha Lakes.
Beginning at 9 a.m., the morning session focuses on universal design learning, creating inclusive placement for students with disabilities, mental health in the workplace and more.
The afternoon session includes the keynote speech as well as paralympian, motivational speaker and forester Alec Denys, who will present on attitudinal barriers facing persons with disabilities.
A panel of experts will also provide a presentation on workplace accommodation.
Throughout the day, the audience will be encouraged to ask questions and start a dialogue.
“A fulfilling agenda is set with a line-up of professional speakers that will garner the interest of many, whether they be an educator, human resources professional, business owner, not for profit organization or anyone who is passionate about accessibility. We hope you can join us,” Condie added.
Registration costs $25 per person, with a deadline of Oct. 1.
Please note that all support persons are exempt from the fee, but registration is required. The fee covers parking, all events, morning and afternoon bites, refreshments and lunch.
