Obituary For Michael Dunk

Michael George Dunk died on January 16 at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre in his 82nd year. He is missed by his wife of 63 years Carol (nee Thurston), his daughter Kelly Jones (née Dunk) and son-in-law Kirk Jones, his granddaughter Alexandra Jones and her partner Tyler Wilson, his two great grand children Audrey and Michael, all of Barrie, Ontario, and his brother, Harry Dunk and sister Mary Eleanor Henley, both of Lindsay, Ontario.

Michael joined the Canadian Army Apprentice Training Plan at 16 combining military training with continuation of education. He served in the Service Corps in a clerical capacity for 16 years rising to Sergeant in the Department of National Defense Management Study unit. When his position became a civilian position, he left the army one Friday in uniform and came back on Monday in “civvies” to the same office and the same desk. Mike remained in the Civil Service as a Management Consultant until his retirement in 1995.

Mike was a talented craftsman creating stained glass objects, intarsia works and many paper cuttings. His forte, though, was duck and decoy carving, winning several awards for his life-like decoys.

He was a patient and congenial chauffeur and technical director taking Carol to and from Horticultural events whether to small horticultural societies or to meetings of the Ontario Horticultural Association

If not carving, or working on some other artistic project, Mike could be found on the golf course. His aim was to shoot his age. He came very close!

Mike will be remembered at a gathering at Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 30 Worsley St., Barrie, on February 2, 2025 from 2pm to 4:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Simcoe County. Online condolences and memories may be shared at www.steckleygooderham.com

Many thanks to the caring people of the RVH for their compassion in caring for Mike to the very end.
