Obituary For Barbara Anne Hewton (van Hulstyn)

Barbara passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 20, 2025, at Ross Memorial Hospital in

Lindsay, with Ron and Mary by her side.

Born in Sarnia Ontario. Barbara was the daughter of Samuel van Hulstyn and Katherine Gibson.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband of 42 years, Norman Hewton (2023), and is fondly remembered by many cousins and friends.

Barbara was a proud Bell Canada employee, working in both Montreal and Toronto. Along with Norman, she spent two years in Trinidad with BCI at Telco before they retired in 1985, having shared a combined 63 years of service. They made their retirement home on the river in Fenelon Falls, Ontario.

In retirement, Barbara continued to serve her community. She worked for twelve years at the

Fenelon Falls branch of the Victoria County Library and volunteered with the Fenelon Falls

Cemetery Board, St. John Ambulance, the Fenelon Falls Curling Club, and more recently with

the Ross Memorial Hospital Auxiliary.

An avid traveler, Barbara enjoyed skiing in Europe and Western Canada, sailing in the

Caribbean, and boating along the eastern seaboard. She and Norman especially treasured their trips to Europe with the Fenelon Falls Curling club.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the medical staff at Ross Memorial Hospital for their kind and compassionate care in recent weeks.

As per Barbara’s wishes, there will be no formal service. A gathering for family and friends will

be held this fall. . Memorial donations in her honour may be made to the Lakeridge Health

Foundation, the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.

We just heard of Barb's passing - had a nice visit with her in Lindsay at the beginning of July. I first met Barb and Norm in Montreal in 1985 - the year they retired, and the year I moved there to go to McGill. We met through Bill and Laura Rowles - Bill was my great uncle, and Laura was Norm's aunt (I think it was). We enjoyed several visits with them over the years - in Montreal, Fenelon Falls, Saskatoon, and Ithaca, NY, where they parked their giant motor home in our driveway one year! We will miss both of them - especially Barb with her ever-cheerful demeanor, even in the face of her recent health challenges. I hope I can get in contact with Ron and Mary, who I don't think I ever met in person! My email (obfuscated) is dtedcaldwell (at) the-popular-google-email-service. Ted Caldwell Ithaca, NY
