New podcast celebrates small business owners

“Our biggest challenge,” said Melissa Wemyss, “will be choosing amongst the hundreds of candidates who all have great stories.”

The CEO of Wards Lawyers, and its resident executive producer of podcasts, is beaming about In Good Company, the new monthly show it recently launched, highlighting local retailers, manufactures and service providers across Kawartha Lakes.

“These (entrepreneurs) each have their own unique backstory that drove them to do what they do,” said Wemyss in a press release. “And we wanted to provide a platform where they could tell that story, in their own words.”

Its first episode, Starting on a High Note, profiles the area’s iconic, family-run music store, Van Halteren’s Music Centre. “To hear both John (Van Halteren) and his son Jeremy get emotional and passionate when talking about a business that has meant so much to their family and to their customers,” said Wemyss. “It’s exactly what this show is all about. Sharing their stories for our community.”

The local law firm is heavily invested in creating a professional and polished-sounding show, having recruited Van Halteren to create its original theme music. “That was extremely important,” said Wemyss. “It has to sound fresh and original.”

She also points out that while they have a list of potential future episodes, they welcome suggestions and input from residents – and business owners – of Kawartha Lakes; Wemyss encourages them contact her directly via Wardlegal.ca.

“We want In Good Company to belong to the community,” she said.

In Good Company with Wards Lawyers is now streaming wherever you find your favourite podcasts.
