Local Liberal candidate says beware of election fraud for voting, donation requests

By Lindsay Advocate

People impersonating Liberal volunteers have been phone-calling and door-knocking in Haliburton Kawartha Lakes to ask for donations, according to local Liberal candidate, Nell Thomas.

“We also have reports that voters are being directed to the wrong polling locations,” said Thomas.

“We will not ask for money at the door,” she said. Anyone interested in donating would be directed to the Liberal website or the campaign office on Kent Street in Lindsay.  To recognize a legitimate Liberal canvasser, look for the Liberal lanyard with a red “Volunteer” tag attached.

“We want to reach out to our voters to talk about our vision and service to the community. And we want them to be armed with the information they need to protect themselves from fraud,” she said. “Please advise your friends, especially seniors who are more vulnerable to these activities.”

Polling locations are found on the Elections Canada Voter Information card, are mailed out to all voters, or are found on the Elections Canada website.

If you suspect a campaign volunteer to be fraudulent, report to the OPP non-emergency line 1-888-310-1122, or to Elections Canada (1-866-239-2831). Let the Liberal campaign office know (249-802-9988).

Also beware of online posts of Prime Minister Mark Carney selling bitcoin, urging people to invest $350 and turn it into thousands in a few weeks. This is a scam, says the media release.
