Mischief at local parks: Damage to washrooms, trains, more

Kawartha Lakes Police are investigating after several acts of mischief to local parks have reportedly occurred between Friday, October 1 and Monday, October 4, 2021.

Police release name in fatal collision

Members of the City of Kawartha Lakes Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are on scene investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision on Highway 35 north of Lindsay.

Unforeseen enrollment increases at public school board

Trillium Lakelands District School Board director Wes Hahn believes he can explain where an additional 500 students came from.

These students are are responsible for larger than expected class sizes, which has caused issues such as buses not picking up all students.

School sports are back, with adjustments

“Extra-curriculars are back,” Trillium Lakelands District School Board’s director of education, Wes Hahn said at the recent board meeting, but not all coaches and teams will be running.

“We will respect if staff feel uneasy or anxious about running teams again,” because of the pandemic, he said. “It is their voluntary right.”

COVID cases largely contained at Trillium Lakelands schools

Director of education for the Trillium Lakelands District School Board Wes Hahn said there are nearly 40 cases of COVID in TLDSB schools, with one case in Haliburton and 21 cases in Kawartha Lakes.

As the nation commemorates its first ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, at least one local Indigenous man says the holiday is already being tainted by commercialization.

Many retailers are selling orange shirts to mark the day but it doesn’t mean the shirts were made by Indigenous communities.
