Name: Sara Johnston
Occupation: Chief, Paramedic Service
Advocate: Where in Kawarthas Lakes do you live and for how long?
Johnston: Born and raised in Kawartha Lakes - live in Lindsay
Advocate: What stresses do you think people are facing in today’s economy? Why?
Johnston: Working in emergency services, we're seeing many people struggling with financial pressures, housing and food costs, work stress, and the challenge of balancing everyday life. A lot of people are simply trying to do their best while juggling work, family, finances, and everything else life throws at them. You never really know what someone is dealing with.
Advocate: Do you think that mental health resources are easy to find in the community?
Johnston: We have strong mental health resources in our community, but they can be difficult to navigate, especially when someone is already struggling or in crisis. We try to help connect people to the right support, but too often people end up calling 911 or going to the emergency department because they don't know where else to turn. Emergency services will always be there to help, but for some people, earlier access to the right mental health support could make a big difference.
Advocate: What do you do when you are having a bad day? How do you blow off the steam?
Johnston: I'm really fortunate to have a great circle of friends and family. When I'm having a bad day, spending time with my family helps me reset and put things back into perspective. I also enjoy walking the dog and going for a run when I can.
