Nobrega: I live in Lindsay and have been here for 14 Years.

Advocate: Do you think small businesses in Kawartha Lakes are struggling or thriving right now?

Nobrega: Many businesses both big and small are dealing with a lot of uncertainty. With costs increasing and customers feeling the economic strain, certain priorities have begun to take place. Many are looking at their overheads and trying to save money in certain areas in their business. This can be anything from, office cleaning services to less visits to their barber. Many people and businesses are trying to spend less. This has a ripple effect. This is true with almost every business, from restaurants having to buy lesser quality ingredients, to customers not being able to afford that dessert at the end of their meal.

Advocate: Have you seen businesses come and go over the years — what do you think determines who survives?

Nobrega: There have been many reasons why businesses fail, but for those who survive and continue on, it has really been down to the culture of the business, its employees and team. Many businesses that can provide a space for its team to thrive, by allowing them to execute best practices in their field, allows for a more productive work approach and a better experience for its customers. It is important to have set standards as an employer, as this is what builds the vision. But building the team as a solid foundation for your business is what will ultimately determine the survival. A safe, fun and productive workplace will bring passion and positive experiences for both its team and clients/customers.

Advocate: What types of business do you think would do well in Kawartha Lakes?

Nobrega: I have young children, and I do not feel there is a space here in Lindsay where families can take their children for multiple activities. A space like Nebs Funworld in the Durham Region, for example. This would be a massive investment. A place like this would not only be a place for many families of all ages, but it would also create many jobs and opportunities within the community.
