Mark Doble announces candidacy for Ward 5

By Lindsay Advocate

A longtime Lindsay resident, Mark Doble, has announced his intention to run for Kawartha Lakes Council in the upcoming Ward 5 byelection.

Mark Doble says that he has the time, energy and passion to serve on city council. He believes that his lifelong experience in public service, combined with his knowledge of the community and its needs and challenges, makes him a solid choice to fill the vacant Ward 5 seat.

“Local councilors have a valuable role to play in ensuring that residents have the essential services to allow our community to thrive, both socially and economically. I was raised to believe in community values, such as helping one another and the importance of giving back through public service,” Doble said in a media release.

Doble and his wife Terry have lived in Lindsay for 44 years. Over the years, he has been involved in many community organizations as a volunteer, including Kawartha Lakes Public Library, Lindsay Concert Foundation, and coaching minor sports. Retired after working for several decades in the municipal sector, Doble authored and published a biography of Canadian musician Domenic Troiano in 2021.

“If I am elected Ward 5 councilor, I will work hard to find answers to concerns that are best for everybody,” Doble said. “Moving forward, city council must encourage all levels of government, whenever possible, to cooperate in order to find solutions to our challenges. We have a great community and a bright future, but meeting challenges is never easy. I will strive to do my best to deal with those challenges.”

Mark, I am delighted that you are again and still offering your wisdom and passion to community service. You would make a wonderful contribution to Council and faithful service to those you represent. I have known you as a person of integrity and commitment for more than 60 years.

I am a Ward 5 resident whose priority in a council representative is electing someone who will represent constituents, starting with returning phone call, email, text and other efforts to contact them. I will reach out to every candidate to test their interest in local residents and will not vote for anyone who doesn’t respond. We don’t need council representatives motivated to run for personal political reasons. Just a general comment not about any candidate in particular but for all. I don’t want an activist ward 5 councillor not interested in constituent representation.

I have known Mark for many years. He is an intelligent , personable , man. Who am pleased to call my friend. I am certain he will represent us well.

Irrelevant that this candidate is an intelligent and personable person who you’re pleased to call a personal friend. Constituents need to know the platform and promises on which a candidates is running, of which there is nothing that I can find online.

At least he delivered a brochure to our house – the only sign of any candidate we have seen anything of to March 26th. We hope he will respond to questions; our previous councillor ignored our letters.

Spoke to him when he came to my door. I found him to be rushed and uninterested. I told him I didn’t like what is happening in Lindsay and am not happy living here. Instead of asking why, or demonstrating any curiousity about the reasons why, he vacuously said, “well, look, I’m going to try to make it a place you like living in.”, and then left.

It left me wondering how he was going to effectively make it a place I do enjoy living in if he doesn’t have an understanding of the reasons why.

UPDATE: In response to my comment above, Mark Doble contacted me via phone call and apologised. In this follow up phone conversation he offered me his time, he asked thoughtful questions and, in contrast to my first impression, I feel that so much of his agenda and his thoughts about how to improve Lindsay are very well thought out and made me feel hopeful for change.

Two really important things that came from our discussion were: I instantly felt that his apology for seeming to move fast and uninterested in our initial meeting was very genuine. Not a thing I expect from politicians, typically. And second, that feeling of authenticity was verified at the end of our conversation when I learned he had already been elected. Meaning: he didn’t have to make the phone call because he was already in the position he had been canvassing for. (It turns out that I was confused about the election dates, I thought he was running for the federal election.)

In any case, I rescind my initial, negative impression of Mr Doble. I was so impressed by him during our second conversation and really appreciated the effort he made to connect, when he didn’t need to.
