With the provincial order for non-essential services to close in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many parts of Kawartha Lakes will see an increase in the number of temporarily-closed businesses.
The Kawartha Lakes Police Service would like to assure local business owners that the force is here to protect small business properties, "and we are increasing the frequency of our patrols in the community," according to Sergeant Dave Murtha.
He says business owners should take a moment to review the following suggestions that may help you to protect their property during temporary pandemic-related closures.
- Perform a check of the perimeter of your business to ensure all doors and windows are locked and secured.
- Double check the security or video surveillance system you have in place to ensure its fully functioning.
- Don’t leave valuables that may be tempting for thieves in storefront window displays.
- Lock up all cash register floats, do not leave cash in you tills.
- Consider setting indoor and outdoor lighting systems on a timer, to come on in the evening. This will make it easier for officers on patrol to inspect your business and will be a deterrent for thieves
