Every year, Canadian engineering excellence is celebrated through the annual Engineering Challenge. This challenge allows youth to experience aspects of problems professional engineers and technologists/technicians strive to solve in their profession. The challenge encourages ingenuity, creativity and teamwork to solve common engineering challenges.

The Lindsay Engineering Challenge is a daylong out of class event, and took place on Friday March 8 at I.E. Weldon Secondary School. According to organizers, it brought awareness to high school students about applied sciences, math, and associated careers, while having fun in a team environment.

The 2024 challenge involved the design and construction of a glider. Each team received supplies and time to build their aircraft. After the gliders were built, they were tested using a specially designed launch mechanism to determine how straight and far they could fly.

Teams scored points for design, construction, performance and knowledge. The knowledge-based section consisted of a short question sheet about the topics in the project.

The event volunteers included engineers and technologists from a variety of industries to discuss engineering/technology as a career choice, and was coordinated by the Peterborough chapters of: the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), and Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO).
