What does it really mean to build a bridge between people who see the world differently? That’s the question at the heart of this new column, Bridges to Understanding.

As a new columnist for Advocate Online, which is The Lindsay Advocate’s bold new digital presence, I am honoured to step into this space with a purpose that is deeply meaningful to me creating bridges to understanding through conversation, reflection and learning.

This column is rooted in the spirit of reconciliation. It is a space where stories, histories and perspectives can meet not in conflict, but in curiosity and respect. Reconciliation is often spoken about in large, abstract terms but at its heart, it begins in small, everyday moments: listening more closely, asking thoughtful questions and being willing to grow beyond what we think we know.

I come to this work not as someone with all the answers but as someone committed to the journey. Like many I am still learning about the histories that have shaped this land, the voices that have too often been overlooked and the ways we can move forward together in a good way. Through this column I hope to share insights, highlight community stories and explore the paths that connect us rather than divide us.

Kawartha Lakes, with its rich landscapes and diverse community, is a place where these conversations matter. Reconciliation is not just a national dialogue it is local, personal and ongoing. It lives in our schools, our neighborhood’s and our relationships with one another.

In the weeks ahead you can expect this column to explore themes of identity, history, culture and community. There will be moments of challenge, but also moments of hope. My goal is to create a space where readers feel invited not judged to reflect, learn and engage.

Thank you for welcoming me into your community and into your reading space. I look forward to walking this path together, one step at a time, as we build stronger bridges to understanding.
