‘Trunks to Treasure:’ Bringing history to life

The Olde Gaol Museum will present a series of three exhibits to the public. Local artist Ann Louise Smith tells the story of a Canadian reverend, Frederick Anderson, his partner, an American born Mabel Jean, and their son, Walter through her artwork and a collection of family artifacts.

The first exhibit, Intricate Needlework of India, will present examples of traditional textiles and needlework that reflect the craftsmanship and skill of the Indian people. The exhibit opens with an admission by donation presentation by Ann at 7 pm on May 31 in the museum’s community room. It will remain at the museum for public viewing during regular museum hours until June 24.

The second exhibit, The Forgotten War, will tell the story of Dr. Walter Anderson and his experiences as a prisoner of war by the Japanese in Burma during WWII. The exhibit opens with an admission by donation presentation by Ann at 7 pm on July 5 in the museum’s community room. It will remain at the museum for public viewing during regular museum hours until July 29.

In the final exhibit of the series, From Souvenir to Artifact, Ann will share a collection of unique artifacts accumulated by the Anderson’s during their world travels. This exhibit opens on August 9 and will remain at the museum for public viewing during regular museum hours until August 31.
