Take your seat at Academy Theatre

Lessons from history: Academy Theatre needs its drama on stage, not at board table

In 1962, the Academy Theatre was slated for demolition. Thanks to a concerned and committed group of Lindsay citizens, the Academy Theatre Foundation was incorporated to purchase the building, and restore it to a live theatre venue as it had been when it opened in 1893.

Now in 2018 as a publicly owned non-profit organization, the Academy is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the theatre.

As part of these celebrations, the seating on the main floor will be replaced with larger, more comfortable seats. Included will be new carpeting and floor level lighting.

Some seats will be removable to accommodate wheelchairs. Due to the configuration of the balcony, the original seats will remain there. A new main floor accessible washroom will also be constructed.

The total cost for these renovations is $340,000. With federal grants of $160,000 approved or received, there is $180,000 to raise. However, a $230,000 fundraising goal has been set to include elimination of the last of their debt to Kawartha Lakes Community Futures Development Corporation.

The fundraising goal is expected to be met by Jan. 31, 2018.

In recognition of every $500 donation, donor support will be recognized with a small plaque installed on a seat back. Charitable receipts will be issued.
