Asymptomatic testing coming to area schools

Kawartha Lakes area parents will soon get the chance to have their asymptomatic children tested for COVID-19 if they wish.

At the recent Trillium Lakelands District School Board meeting, Director of Education Wes Hahn shared details regarding the changes in testing and screening mandated by the province, soon to be rolled out by the HKPR District Health Unit, private labs, and TLDSB.

Laura LeMiere’s nana is 90-years-old and has limited mobility. When she required blood work to confirm a health concern, her options were clear – pay to have someone from LifeLabs come to her home, or face line-ups at the lab on Angeline Street in Lindsay.

Online booking is not an option for LeMiere’s nana without a computer or internet and booking an appointment by phone is often difficult due to wait times.

LifeLabs says they’ve reduced wait times at Lindsay location ‘by half’

After an Advocate investigation into the long wait times faced by local residents at LifeLabs, the city’s only community bloodwork location, the private company says they have now reduced wait times by half.

A media spokesperson for the company who would only identify himself as “Roy” said in an emailed response that LifeLabs regularly reviews how it’s doing to “ensure residents have access to high-quality services within their community.”

Since we launched the Advocate three years ago, we’ve never had so many people call or email to suggest we do the same story. The obscenely long wait times at LifeLabs in Lindsay — the only community bloodwork lab in Kawartha Lakes — has left far too many people frustrated and troubled.

They are frustrated because people — mostly seniors — are literally waiting hours to get bloodwork, or even to do something as simple as dropping off a completed home testing kit. They are troubled because they’re wondering what winter will bring and how they can possibly cope under such conditions.

Community anger growing with long wait times at LifeLabs

Outrage over long wait times at Lindsay’s LifeLabs – the only such laboratory in Kawartha Lakes – is growing.

The Advocate has fielded several emails and calls from residents who are increasingly frustrated not only with the wait times but with the conditions of their wait. According to several people who were standing in line, chairs are not provided for those who may need a break from standing and people are forced to be outside — even in inclement weather.
