City’s 10-year homeless plan aims for nearly 1,300 housing units

The City’s new 10-year homelessness plan, set to be complete by 2029, seeks to build as many as 1,280 new housing units for those with below-average income in Kawartha Lakes and 750 for the County of Haliburton.

It’s a goal that Michelle Corley, program supervisor at Housing Help for Kawartha Lakes and one of the 14 committee members who formed the plan, said was slowed down from the pandemic but still underway.

John Howard Society launches online tool to better navigate job seeking

Today, the John Howard Society of Ontario launched a new online tool to help those with a police record better navigate the job-seeking process.

The online tool shows those who have a police record how they can proactively and transparently disclose their record to a potential employer. Nearly one in 17 Canadians report having a criminal record, according to a media release.

Years ago on a Toronto subway, Lois Powers noticed a poster of a man leaving prison. The caption read: “Freedom. Now the punishment begins.”

Inspired by this powerful image, Powers went on to work for justice through various positions in social services, including the Toronto John Howard Society. Today she is the executive director of the John Howard Society (JHS) of Kawartha Lakes & Haliburton.
