City recommends internet and telephone voting for 2022 election

Kawartha Lakes council unanimously recommended at their Jan. 12 committee of the whole meeting that the city permanently adopt the combination of internet and telephone voting for future municipal elections that was first experimented with in 2018.

City clerk Cathy Ritchie asked that the internet/telephone vote be kept for the upcoming Oct. 24, 2022 city-wide election.

Roderick Benns recently interviewed the PPC, Conservative, Liberal, Green, and NDP candidates for Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes, Brock riding to help voters make an informed decision leading up to the election in October. In our second installment we connect with Barbara Doyle of the NDP.

Benns: Can you highlight a policy of your party that will lead to increased employment and increased average income in our riding? 

Doyle: The NDP will start by immediately increasing the minimum wage to $15 that will help over 900,000 workers across the country while supporting small businesses with the access to service they need to grow, innovate and stay competitive in Canada and around the world. That’s why we have stood up for lower small business taxes, opposed unfair merchant fees, and fought to make it easier to pass on small businesses to the next generation by ending the unfair tax treatment of family transfers of small businesses.

Forbes to square off for Liberals in upcoming federal election

The Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock Liberal Association has announced that Judi Forbes has successfully completed the nomination application process. At the nomination meeting on June 26 Forbes will be acclaimed as the Liberal candidate in the riding for the federal election in October.

As the owner of Moorlands Bed and Breakfast in Beaverton, and a former bank senior manager, Judi has a deep understanding of the daily challenges faced by families into our region, according to a press release.

Breaking: Gord James says handling of election process ‘doesn’t pass the smell test’

The campaign team of mayoral candidate Gord James has written a letter to the City Clerk requesting to see the original election data from Dominion Voting for the City of Kawartha Lakes municipal election results.

The team has also asked for an official response as to why the results were tabulated/received by City election staff without the candidates’ scrutineers present.
