In a letter to parents from I.E. Weldon S.S., the high school has advised that a person who from Weldon has tested positive for COVID-19

The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge District Health Unit advised the school about the positive test and the board was in touch with the person’s family.

The letter home to parents states that, “If your child is NOT a close contact of a person who tested positive for COVID-19 you WILL NOT receive another communication from the school and no action is required.”

Sinead Fegan, communications officer with TLDSB, tells the Advocate that people in the same class as the infected person are among those “identified as close contacts (and) have been contacted by the health unit with directions they must follow.”

“This further direction includes quarantining, not leaving their property unless it is to go for testing or to seek necessary medical attention, and it is recommended they go for testing at their nearest assessment centre,” she said.

This means all the students affected will immediately be doing distance learning only.

In the letter to all families, the school notes this information “may be upsetting.”

“We are working closely with Trillium Lakelands District School Board, our transportation consortium, and HKPRDHU. Together, we are taking necessary steps to prevent the further spread of COVID-19 within our school community. Due to privacy laws, the health unit will not release personal information about any staff or student who is ill unless deemed necessary,” the letter states.
