Russell Alexander announces $2,500 law scholarship winner from Lindsay

Russell Alexander Collaborative Family Lawyers announced university student Mary Hallett — who is also from Lindsay — as the winner of its $2,500 law scholarship.

The scholarship is offered annually to offset the costs of studying the field of law in Canada. This year, the grant included a technology stipend to help with remote learning during the coronavirus pandemic.

“We were very impressed with the number of submissions that came in,” said founder Russell Alexander. “Given the ongoing health crisis with no clear ending in sight, we felt it was appropriate to add some additional money for a new computer, tablet, or other electronic device.”

Since 2017, the law firm (which has an office in Lindsay, as well as six other locations) has given $2,000 to a student who has an interest in joining or studying the legal profession. This year, the scholarship included a technology stipend worth an additional $500 to buy an electronic device needed to take classes online due to the ongoing pandemic.

This scholarship was open to Canadian students who were set to graduate from high school in the current academic year.

To qualify, applicants had to have an average of 80 per cent or higher and an interest in joining the legal community. Students were required to write a 1,000-word essay on a family law issue and upload a high-school transcript, resume and recommendation letter to complete the application process.

“We were really inspired by the thoughtfulness of the submissions this year, especially,” added Alexander. “The enthusiasm, passion and drive expressed in so many of the applications really gives us hope for the future of the legal profession in Canada.”
