Old grave discovered

By Lindsay Advocate

On November 2 the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service was contacted after human remains were located in a rural area south of Lindsay.

The attending officer spoke with the complainant who is an archaeologist and had been hired to conduct an archaeological survey.

The area being surveyed was adjacent to known historical gravesites.  The complainant was attempting to determine if there were any other graves prior to the area being developed further.  During the course of the survey, human bones were located in an unmarked grave outside the marked graveyard.

It was determined the shallow grave was likely at least 150 years old and there was evidence of a coffin including pieces of wood and square nails.  It was determined that the discovery of human remains was not related to a criminal offence and the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service will not be investigating further.
