No grounds to press charges in death of inmate

The City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service has completed their investigation into the death of Soleiman Faqiri, an inmate found to be unresponsive at the Central East Corrections Centre in Lindsay last year.

Police say no grounds exist to process criminal charges against anyone who was involved with Faqiri prior to his death.

On Dec. 15 last year Kawartha Lakes Police were contacted after Kawartha Lakes Paramedic Services had attended to an unresponsive male inmate. The 30-year-old inmate was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Centre of Forensic Sciences and Coroners Complex in Toronto later that night for an autopsy.

Since that time, members of the Kawartha Lakes Police Service have been investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of Faqiri. The Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Services were also involved.

Following a thorough analysis of all the evidence and witness statements, and after consulting with the Office of the Crown Attorney and the Office of the Chief Coroner and Ontario Forensic Pathology Services, Kawartha Lakes Police Service made their conclusion that there was no culpability for anyone in the event.
