Need work? Need workers? JobCrush Career Expo on Sept. 8

An event designed to match job seekers from Lindsay and the surrounding areas with an employer is being held Sept. 8 in Lindsay.

Hosted by Barbara Doyle and Zac Miller of the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock NDP, it is a non-partisan event and all are welcome to attend.

“We strongly believe in supporting our community and helping in any way that we can. We participated in the rally (organized by the Lindsay Advocate) to restore the Basic Income Pilot Program and have been very vocal in support of this program becoming universal,” according to their press release.

While about 70 per cent of the people on the program are employed, “we heard that people needed better paying jobs, or different jobs, to help them become self-sufficient,” according to Miller and Doyle in their press release.

The goal is to bring under one roof as many employers, support services and educational or training opportunities as possible, at no cost to any of the participants.

While the organizers talked to people about basic income and watched the social media feeds for comments, one theme in particular caught their attention.

“Several people said, why not host a job fair instead of a protest rally? And we thought, hey, why not do that? Supporting the concept of universal Basic Income and also helping people connect with employers are not mutually exclusive concepts.”

The organizers invite employers to contact them to book space or send job listings. The event will be held Sept. 8 at the Commonwell Exhibition Building at the Lindsay Exhibition fairgrounds from 10 am to 4 pm.
