Month long gun amnesty has ended

By Roderick Benns

During the month of April the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service, in partnership with other police services in Ontario, participated in a provincial gun amnesty.

The gun amnesty was implemented for any Ontario resident who wished to voluntarily surrender unwanted or illegally-owned firearms, weapons, accessories or ammunition.

The program provided citizens with a safe way to surrender weapons and enhance public safety.

During the April gun amnesty the City of Kawartha Lakes Police Service received twenty non-restricted long guns, one restricted handgun, one prohibited handgun, one prohibited weapon (the “butterfly” style knife pictured) and several hundred rounds of ammunition.

In accordance with the conditions of the gun amnesty program, all of the weapons and ammunition turned into the police service will be destroyed.
