Million Dollar Makeover: First intake a success with 17 successful applicants
Communities across the municipality will begin to see makeovers taking place for 17 business and property owners who were successful applicants in the first round of the Million Dollar Makeover funding program. In total, almost $400,000 of the nearly $1,100,000 has been allocated for 2019.
Construction for the 17 businesses is expected to start this spring. Makeovers will take place across the municipality, with funding being allocated to properties within Bobcaygeon, Coboconk, Fenelon Falls, Kinmount, Lindsay and Omemee. In total, there have been eight loans executed (or otherwise conditionally approved) at a value of $300,325.80 and 12 grants allocated equalling $67,114.25. The most popular programs approved were façade, signage and building repair renovations.
“We are very proud of the investment that the Million Dollar Makeover program has brought to our community,” stated Carlie Arbour, Economic Development Officer – Community. “We are hopeful that this first round will create further interest for property owners and that they continue to take advantage of the Million Dollar Makeover funding available in the second intake.”
In addition to the initial funding, another $100,000 in grants has been approved by Council. The funding is open to all areas within Kawartha Lakes, with a priority on downtown and main street areas. The City has opened the Accessibility Improvement program for grant applications, which was previously available only through a loan.
The Million Dollar Makeover will open a second intake on April 12, 2019. The application process will remain the same. Business and property owners are encouraged to complete an Expression of Interest prior to submitting their funding application as it will assist with the approval process.
