Fundraiser in Bobcaygeon for National Galgo adoption

By Lindsay Advocate

The annual fundraising picnic for Carlota Galgos Rescue Canada (CGRC), a national not-for-profit animal adoption organization, will be held in Bobcaygeon this year. This event is an opportunity to bring together adopters and their dogs as well as those interested in adopting a Galgo that would like to meet the breed. All are welcome to attend.

Galgos, also commonly known as Spanish Greyhounds, are a specialty breed of hare-hunting dog from Spain. The plight of the Galgo is gaining worldwide attention because unlike other household pets, Galgos are uniquely classified by Spanish law as “tools” or “chattels” and as such, can be slaughtered, abused, and abandoned with few repercussions.

It is estimated that more than 100,000 Galgos were abandoned, killed, or maimed at the end of the February hunting season this year alone. Because of their sweet disposition, unique beauty, and athleticism, Galgos are prized by many other countries around the world as domestic household pets once they have been rescued and rehabilitated.

Since 2014, registered not-for-profit group, CGRC, has operated in association with the Malaga, Spain organization 112 Carlota Galgos to bring more than 100 of these amazing dogs to Canada for adoption.

Bobcaygeon resident, Jan Care, who has adopted two Galgos herself, is hosting the picnic fundraiser as the volunteer event coordinator for CGRC. The event will include a silent auction, raffle, supervised dog runs in an enclosure, an extensive marketplace with pet-related vendors, paw painting (an artist uses your dog’s footprints to create original artwork), and a barbecue lunch.

All well-behaved dogs and their humans are invited to attend but no extendable leads are allowed as they are a hazard to the delicate skin of sighthounds. There is no cost to enter the event and meet the dogs and parking is free.

Local sponsors for this event include Pet Valu in Bobcaygeon, Lions Club of Bobcaygeon, and Pet Valu in Lindsay. National sponsors of the event include BarkBox, Chilly Dogs, Champion Pet Foods and many more.
