Lorne Thurston, a long-term care resident at Lakeland Village, is set to mark a momentous occasion this July 1st as he celebrates both his country and his 100th birthday. Born on Canada Day, Lorne expresses his excitement, stating, “I couldn’t think of a better day for a birthday. It’s quite something to be born on Canada Day.”

Lorne’s remarkable journey spans from his birth in Saskatchewan to his move to Reaboro, Ontario, where he settled at the age of 14. He pursued a career in the construction business in Toronto, showcasing his versatility and expertise in various roles before retiring as the head of the building department.

Returning to the Kawartha Lakes region almost a decade ago, Lorne embraced life at Extendicare Lakeland Village. Despite reaching the centennial milestone, Lorne remains full of energy and vitality, according to a media release. He engages in a daily half-mile walk before breakfast, enjoys shuffleboard, immerses himself in puzzles, participates in the choir, and even takes part in the plays organized at the facility.

“The advice I’d give for a long and happy life is to always be grateful and appreciate time,” he says. “Always participate. Keep playing games. Keep walking far. Keep singing. Keep finding joy and when you find it, spread it to others.”

Lorne’s exemplary character and embodiment of Canadian values have earned him admiration from the community, according to the media release. Michelle Gavin, the home administrator at Lakeland Village, says “he personifies so much of what it means to be Canadian. He is kind, welcoming, involved in his community, and genuinely cares about the people around him.” She describes him as a wonderful man, emphasizing the significance of his birthday coinciding with Canada Day.

In honour of Lorne’s milestone and the national celebration, friends and the Lakeland Village team have planned a grand birthday party. The festivities, taking place this weekend, will feature music and cake in the garden.
