Explore science and tech at Pinnguaq’s Big Summer Hangout

Pinnguaq is gearing up for an exciting autumn of live programming and events, beginning with its Big Summer Hangout pop-up event on Aug. 28 from 10 am to 3 pm on the Kawartha Lakes Makerspace in Lindsay.

Families and educators in Kawartha Lakes are invited to drop by at 87 Adelaide St. N. in Lindsay to get hands-on with cool STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math) activities, including Dash & Dot, Osmos, microscopes, cyanotype sun prints, and more, according to a media release.

“After many months of virtual work, our team is super excited to safely welcome families and eager young STEAM explorers back to the Makerspace,” says Pinnguaq CEO, Ryan Oliver. “As we get ready to  reopen our doors again to live events, we couldn’t think of a better way to say hello to the community than holding this end-of-summer outdoor event.”

The Kawartha Lakes Makerspace, scheduled to begin hosting workshops and other experiences this fall, is home to plenty of games, tools, and technology that help learners of all ages explore STEAM learning and digital skills in creative and innovative ways.

“We have so many amazing gadgets, gizmos, and activities that spark excitement and creativity, like the Dash & Dot robots,” explains Kayla Blacquiere, a Kawartha Lakes Makerspace educator. “They are a great way to introduce concepts like coding and electricity, and they give our learners the chance to experiment and see their ideas come to life. And once they’ve tried them out on Saturday, they are welcome to come back to some of the great workshops, programs, and events that we’ll be hosting this Fall online and in-person.”

Pinnguaq has also extended an invitation to local elected officials and candidates, to help them understand the vital importance of STEAM-based learning and experiences, both in school and in the community.

Social distancing and other public health mandates will be in effect for this outdoor event.
