CKL updating waste management strategy
The “Making Waste Matter: Integrated Waste Management Strategy” for Kawartha Lakes is currently under review and will be updated later on this year. As outlined in the plan’s keys for success, the strategy must be adaptable and accountable, designed to grow and change with future waste management needs and opportunities.
The strategy outlines effective and efficient waste management initiatives for the municipality, with an ultimate goal of diverting 70% of waste from all municipal landfills by 2048. Below are some examples of successful programs that have already been accomplished under the current strategy:
- Clear Bag Program
- Backyard Composting Program
- Mattress Recycling Pilot
- Construction and Demolition Recycling Pilot
- Habitat for Humanity Reuse Bin
- Curbside Battery Recycling
“The current strategy has produced many successful programs towards meeting our goals surrounding waste diversion. In 2018, the mattress recycling pilot successfully diverted 1000 mattresses from our landfills in just three months,” stated David Kerr, Manager, Environmental Services in a press release. “We want to keep this movement going forward in the new strategy, exploring options around waste management that will help meet our targeted goals.”
Waste Management is looking for public feedback on the current strategy and is interested in hearing directly from residents on new ideas or programs that could be incorporated in the updated document.
