Cambridge Street United’s soup fundraiser a hit at homeless shelter

A local church was teeming with crock pots recently in what is now an annual event and fundraiser for A Place Called Home.

Cambridge Street United Church’s Soupfest sees its congregation gather after service on the first Sunday following New Year’s to sample homemade soups from almost a dozen crock pots – all donated by members of the church.

“Somebody remarked that this has turned into a kind of a haven for soup sommeliers,” joked Reverend Craig Donnelly. “It really is a great opportunity to indulge in so many different tastes and recipes. And it’s such a nice combination of fellowship and fundraising.”

SoupFest, which attracts about 100 people each year, sees soup tasters make a goodwill offering. All money goes to A Place Called Home.

So far, the event, which started in 2017, has earned about $1,500 for the local homeless shelter. But it’s the donation of soup to the shelter that APCH director Lorrie Polito says is especially appreciated.

“On a cold winter afternoon, to indulge in something that’s fresh and homemade and hearty, well that can certainly make anyone’s day warmer and better.”
