Seniors: Protect yourself from fraud scams with free seminar

By Lindsay Advocate

Fraud is the number one crime against older Canadians. Though people of all ages can be victims of fraud, older people get targeted more than others. Some of the reasons are that they are often home during the day to answer the door or phone, they can be more trusting and they may not have family or friends close by to ask for a second opinion.

Con artists who commit fraud and scams don’t just target people who have a lot of money. A con artist may steal a small amount from many people. They use a variety of ways to reach people, including the Internet, phone calls and even door-to-door visits.

Locally, Community Care is pleased to collaborate with the CIBC Bobcaygeon Banking Centre to present an upcoming information event to help seniors educate and protect themselves against fraud. “Reduce Your Risk … Protect Yourself From Senior Fraud Scams” is a free session taking place June 17 at the Bobcaygeon Senior Centre (100 Head St.) at 1 p.m.

Constable Carrie Lanning, Community Services Officer with the Kawartha Lakes OPP detachment, will be the presenter. Light refreshments will be provided.

To register, call Community Care at 705-324-7323 ext 654 or the Bobcaygeon CIBC Banking Centre at 705-738-2314 ext 222.
