Letter carrier asks where sidewalk plows are

By Lindsay Advocate

There's a sidewalk here somewhere.

The sidewalk plows that ordinarily clear snow seemed to be mostly zooming around the roads, driving past uncleared sidewalks. I have seen this, as I am a letter carrier and I am baffled as there has been no progress with sidewalk clearing, unlike previous snow events. Might you be able to find out why?

Response from Cheri Davidson, manager of communications for Kawartha Lakes:

Due to the volume of snow received over the course of two days, with the addition of freezing temperatures, road operations staff are managing removal and clearing of snow as best as possible while managing weather conditions.

There may be some delays experienced in removal of snow on side roads and sidewalks, as staff are following Ministry of Transportation standards and ensuring that major and arterial are cleared as a priority.

Please be patient and should individuals wish to report snow removal concerns in their area, visit the city’s website.

We drove down to our store Monday night after the snow had stopped, and dug everything out. We showed up Tuesday morning, to find the snow plow had covered the entire sidewalk with three feet of road snow. I mean the entire sidewalk. From the road to our door, three feet deep with that heavy snow the plow leaves. The plow must have been going at a good clip to shoot the snow all the way to our door and cover the whole sidewalk when it was bare the night before. It was impossible for me to clear the snow myself, and getting in the store required climbing through three feet of snow. Wednesday we decided to pay someone to come and dig us out, but with the sidewalk blocked on both sides of us, it is still nearly impossible for customers to come in. The other side of the street had their sidewalks plowed Tuesday morning. It is now Thursday night and our side is not cleared. We cleared our snow Monday night. The town buried us. We PAID to get dug out a second time. Maybe the town should hire someone to help get the sidewalks clear. They are responsible for covering them.
