Inaugural Kawartha Lakes Winter Festival set for Feb. 1
The first Kawartha Lakes Winter Festival will be happening this Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Eganridge Resort in Fenelon Falls.
The day will see snowshoe and trail running and walking events beginning at 10 a.m. on the resort golf course, followed by free family activities in the afternoon.
The snowshoe event will serve as the national championship for Snowshoe Canada. The winner will be presented with a trophy and a cash prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the top three male and female winners in the long course event. Age group medals will also be handed out to the top three in age groups 13-19, 20-29, 40-59, and those over 60.
“The purpose of the event is to get people outside in winter for some fun and fitness,” said Dave Robinson, race director.
Afternoon activities will include tobogganing (eventgoers are asked to bring their own), snowman building, maple syrup tasting, snowmobile rides and a demonstration by the Fleming College logger sports team.
Live music will be held in the resort bar by local artist Shannon Roszell.
“This is new event in the area, and it does take time for these sort of things to catch on, but we are hoping for good weather and a good turnout for the first year,” said Robinson.
The event is part of the Dion Canadian Snowshoe Series and money raised will go to the Boys and Girls Club of Kawartha Lakes.
